How to Move a Refrigerator Using an Appliance Dolly
Moving heavy appliances across the house often requires the use of a dolly. It simplifies the shifting process and the user can now easily move heavy objects like refrigerators, gun safes, ATM machines, snack vending machines and soda makers without having to actually lift it all the way. Here are some tips to help you use appliance dollies effectively.
Acquire the Measurements
While moving large appliances like a refrigerator, it is important to get the device measured for its height, depth and weight. Use a measuring tape to get the readings and also obtain the measurements for the doorway. This is to ensure that the fridge can be easily move through the doorway. If the space is small, you might have to remove the doors and its hinges. It is also a good idea to obtain the measurements of the tow truck if you are planning on transporting the fridge to another location.
Clear Contents
If the refrigerator is already in use, it is essential to clear all the contents. Pack all the perishable and non-perishable products separately. You are also required to unplug and defrost the freezer before moving it. The thawing process can typically take 6 to 7 hours.
Moving the Refrigerator
Move the fridge away from the wall and slide the dolly underneath it. You need to make sure that you are using the appropriate dolly for the job after looking at its measurements. It is recommended to ask your friends to help you even when you are using a dolly. Handling heavy equipment across the stairs or loading them onto the truck usually requires more than two people. One person can hold the handle of the dolly while two or more people can stay at the other end negotiating a path for movement.
Once the fridge is positioned on the dolly, secure it with straps to keep it in position. You can now simply coast the dolly along by pushing it with the handle. After you have placed it in its new position, wait for 2 to 3 hours before plugging the device. This will give it enough time for the fluids to settle down in the compressor. You can now load all the packed items back into the refrigerator and plug it in for use.
